JUNCO!We love these guys and look forward to their winter stay each year. These grey and white beauties love to scuttle around on the ground and often give us the appearance of little mice! They are very fond of millet and cracked corn and really prefer being on or near the ground.
To entice them, set out a tray of milet.
If you have cats roaming in your yard, set the millet tray AWAY from cover that the cats can use to hide in. This gives the juncos a clear view of the area around the feeder.
Doves of course will also come for millet so make the area large enough to accomodate them. And then, keep an eye out for the pretty winter sparrows who show up as well. Song sparrow, white crowned and white throated are often seen.
If you have a yard with some underbrush, you may also see Towhee! A beautiful robin look a like, but dark on top with reddish sides... They also like the millet!
