Grape jelly and cardinals

Written by Karin "Kitty" McKelvey of Wild Bird Center

I thought grape jelly was just for orioles but I was wrong.  The previous owners of the Wild Bird Center put a grape jelly feeder on their deck last winter.  To their delight, cardinals ate at their jelly feeder regularly.  Since mockingbirds come to my yard and they eat fruit I figured I might as well try it too.  Sure enough, after a week or two a male cardinal ate the inexpensive grape jelly and now my mockingbird does too.  Maybe I'll get lucky enough to attract a Baltimore oriole.  Another new experience in my yard is a pair of robins who eat at my pole mounted fly-through feeder.  Last year I saw them eat on the ground directly below the feeder and I just assumed they were eating bugs, but then I realized they were eating sunflower and peanut bits that were scattered.  Apparently they decided the feeder was safe and more abundant with food.
