It has been a thrill opening and operating a Wild Bird Centers store in my hometown. As a result we have been able to collaborate with neighbors about the activities of our localized birding population. This kind of information has helped us to recommend better feeders and seed for our area.
Talking widely with neighbors has also allowed us to identify and verify at least one non-native bird. A rather large bird approached my son and wife in a field near Route 92. She called me frantically in an effort to identify this weird bird that she had never seen before. She gave me a description and I was unsure what it was.
The following day a customer came into the store and described a "strange bird" that he saw and I recognized that it was the same decription my wife gave me of her mystery bird. We narrowed it down to a Chukar (which is not native). A few hours later another excited customer came into the store to describe this "weird bird" that her and her children had seen in thier backyard. It was none other than the Chukar.
We don't know what happened to the Chukar, but it was an exciting time and people went out looking to spot it. We even put cracked corn out for it in our backyard.
Birding can be a lot of fun and the experience of sharing your yard with these beautiful flying creatures can be shared and enjoyed by everyone.
