If you are a backyard bird feeder you probably fight the usual battles with unwanted guests. This year there are many European Starlings coming to feeders. These birds are very aggressive and can dominate feeders, quickly emptying your seed, and leaving little for our more desired friends. We have been successful using straight safflower in feeders with platforms or perches. Starlings do not generally like safflower. Using a feeder with a cage around it can also detour starlings, allowing you to use seed blends and suets. Some feeders like the Squirrel Buster Plus can be adjusted to make it difficult for starlings and yet still serve the smaller birds.
