Snow is for the birds!

Although it's difficult for birds when the snow flies, it's fantastic for human type bird feeders. With north wind howling, snow falling horizontally and 15 inches in the yard....the birds are looking for a handout.

This mornning I had 75 plus red winged blackbirds, 4 magpies, 12 crows, 1 grackle, 3 blue jays, lots of house finches, sparrows, juncos, 7 flickers, a pair of downy woodpeckers (one in the front, one in the back ...they seldom show up togther) a mourning dove and an Eurasian collared dove.3 chickadees....and I'm thinking my little sharp shinned hawk because it got very quiet for about 45 minutes.

WBC Cheepers blend was a hit with the red wing's, sparrows and juncos which I shamelessly broadcast in the drive, patio, and back sidewalk. I put, as usual, Patio Wise in the tray feeders, then spread some in the driveway. Peanuts for the corvids. The flickers ate everything. Sunflower hearts in the tube feeders along with a separate feeder of safflower for the finches. My nut feeders had chopped tree nuts and cashews (which went first ...they are soft and easy to peck pieces from..a favorite with the chickadees.) And suet (oh, forgot, about 6 starlings)

The most popular feature was the heated birdbath, a waiting "line" in the bushes and trees to get a drink.

The bird houses had been used last night...think I'll put up a roosing box when it gets nice next week..just in case.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a hundred black birds in my backyard during snow storms! I also have about 10+ pigeons along with the others you mention-- including the hawk! I wonder if we are neighbors! Question: if I put up a bird house or two now, would they use it?
