GLEN ECHO, MARYLAND -- February 1, 2012 -- The Wild Bird Centers of America ( supports the International Franchise Association (IFA) which has joined efforts with First Lady Michelle Obama to develop "Operation Enduring Opportunity", an industry-wide recruitment plan designed to help veterans choose a career in franchising. The goal of "Operation Enduring Opportunity" is to encourage the franchise industry to hire up to 75,000 veterans and 5,000 Wounded Warriors as franchise team members and business owners by 2014.

In that spirit, the Wild Bird Centers of America is proud to offer a $5,000 discount from its franchise fee to qualified veterans through IFA's VetFran program. In addition, new legislation currently under consideration, S. 1540/H.R. 2888, is the "Help Veterans Own Franchises Act" which provides a tax credit for honorably discharged veterans to help them become small business owners. This tax credit offsets start-up costs equal to 25% of franchise fees with a $100,000 limit. In other new federal legislation, the "Franchise Education for Veterans Act "(H.R. 3351), allows veterans interested in purchasing a franchise business to use up to $15,000 in GI bill funds for that purpose. ( to pay for franchise education and training programs.

According to George Petrides, Jr., CEO of the Wild Bird Centers of America, "We are very proud to be part of the VetFran program and actively want to speak with veterans who want to own and operate their own Wild Bird Center business. A successful franchise owner requires leadership skills, discipline, and a strong work ethic. Not surprisingly, many veterans possess precisely these attributes, gained through their military service. We have already seen these characteristics in our Wild Bird Center franchise owners with military experience. I believe strongly that many veterans with an interest in nature and business will find a Wild Bird Center franchise a great fit."

The Wild Bird Centers of America ( is a national franchise system supporting wild bird and nature specialty stores throughput the United States and Canada. For more information, contact the Director of Franchise Development, Jeff Young, at jeff at or (301) 841-6405.
